Tel Aviv (Israel) – More than 500 people lost their lives in a rocket attack on Al-Ahli Arab City Hospital in Gaza City. When Hamas accused Israel of carrying out this attack, Israel denied the accusation and claimed that Hamas itself carried out this attack. Israel also presented a video as evidence. In the video, Palestinian soldiers were seen launching rockets from near the hospital, and one of these rockets missed the target and hit their own hospital. Israel also alleged that the ‘Islamic Jihad’ organisation was responsible for the attack. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that, “those who brutally killed our children are also the killers of their own (Palestine) children”.

Joe Biden expressed sorrow

Reacting to the attack on the hospital, Joe Biden said that, “The United States stands unequivocally for the protection of civilian life during conflict and we mourn the patients, medical staff and other innocents killed or wounded in this tragedy”.

Countries like Turkey, Iran, Russia, Canada have also condemned the attack on the hospital. Turkish President Erdogan said that the attack on the women, children and innocent people of Gaza is against fundamental human values.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that this deliberate attack on refugee camps is a complete violation of fundamental human values.

The World Health Organisation condemned it, saying that Israel must comply with international humanitarian law, which means hospitals should not have been targeted. Israeli soldiers should withdraw the order to evacuate northern Gaza.

The United Arab Emirates and Russia have called an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

Those involved in the attack should be held responsible

PM Modi tweeted about the attack on the hospital saying, “Deeply shocked at the tragic loss of lives at the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza. Our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, and prayers for speedy recovery of those injured. Civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict are a matter of serious and continuing concern. Those involved should be held responsible”.

Most likely it was an attack by Hamas

While it is not clear who is behind the rocket attack, there are various theories being put forward. So far, there has been no instance of a single rocket killing 500 or so people in an attack by Hamas or Israel. There have been incidents where 4-5 people have been killed in rocket attacks. So, if a rocket was fired at a hospital, it is likely that the hospital had a significant stockpile of ammunition or weapons prior to the attack. Additionally, the timing of the incident, just hours before US President Joe Biden’s visit to Israel, raises questions about the motive behind the attack. Some speculate that Hamas may have staged the attack to garner sympathy from the international community. It is worth mentioning that the reported figure of 500 casualties hasn’t been officially confirmed and may not be accurate.
