Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – The recent conversion of a Hindu youth to Islam by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has sparked a fervent debate. The act took place openly as he led the namaz prayers at a mosque in Selangor.
Prof. P Ramasamy, former Deputy Chief Minister of Penang province in Malaysia, shared his thoughts on the incident. He remarked, “The Prime Minister’s action reflects a lack of regard for the Hindu community. Hindus have made significant sacrifices for Malaysia’s progress, with some even forsaking their lives. Is Anwar Ibrahim the same leader that Indians and other citizens placed their trust in ? The Prime Minister’s response to an Indian student’s education-related query was highly inappropriate and is unacceptable to the Indian population. It is unimaginable for Prime Minister Ibrahim to convert a Hindu youth within a mosque. This is an unprecedented action by any Prime Minister. One must question the motivation behind converting a Hindu youth to Islam. Does this reflect an attempt to showcase incompatibility between Islam and other faiths within the country ? Could it be a method to force people from different religions to convert through such practices ?”
