Polygamy is a religious practice in Islam

Samajwadi Party MP Shafiqur Rahman claims

Lucknow (UP) – Shafiqur Rahman, an MP from the Samajwadi Party (SP), has expressed his support for polygamy while citing religious reasons. He stated, “Polygamy is a religious practice within Islam, and it is also permitted in the Quran.” This assertion comes amidst efforts by Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, to introduce a law prohibiting polygamy in the State. As part of this process, the public’s opinions have been solicited concerning the proposed legislation. In light of this development, Shafiqur Rahman made his claims.

The Government has no right to interfere in Islam

Shafiqur Rahman said, “The Government does not possess the authority to intervene in or prohibit the religious customs of Islam. If legislation promoting monogamy is enacted, we will provide a response.” In response to the notice circulated by the Assam Government, the Court stated that “having multiple wives is not an indispensable tenet of the Islamic faith.”

Editorial Viewpoint

It is undeniable that individuals engaging in polygamy, which encourages the idea of having a large number of children, contribute significantly to the increased strain on the country’s resources. Public figures who obstruct national interests by using religion as an excuse should be removed from their positions. It is puzzling why those who claim to be secularists remain silent about this issue.
