Vladimir Putin’s opponent sentenced to 25 years in prison

 Russian opposition leader Vladimir Kara-Murza

Moscow (Russia) – Russian opposition leader Vladimir Kara-Murza has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for treason by a Russian Court. Murza had criticised Russia over the ongoing war in Ukraine and had also supported an anti-national organisation by spreading false information about the Russian military, the Court said. A fine of 4 lakh Rubles (₹4.03 Lakhs) has also been imposed on him.

1. Murza has been sentenced to the maximum number of years so far, but he has denied all the charges against him.

2. Murza was arrested a year ago. He railed against Russia at an event in the US last year, claiming that the Russian military was committing war crimes in Ukraine, bombing residential areas, as well as hospitals and schools.

3. So far Murza has been poisoned twice.

4. British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley has expressed that the sentence given to Kara-Murza is shocking.
