Colombo (Sri Lanka) – The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 24 Indian fishermen and seized their 5 trawlers for allegedly fishing in the country’s territorial waters. The Navy said that a total of 252 Indian fishermen have been arrested so far this year for fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, informed about this incident and sought action to secure the release of fishermen and their boats from the neighboring country through a letter to the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The letter further says, “The repeated instances of arrests by the Sri Lankan navy are causing severe stress and anguish among the fishermen community in Tamil Nadu who are solely dependent on fishing. The fragile coastal economy is facing a crisis and it needs our support.”

Editorial viewpoints

  • Why don’t the Indian Coast Guards and the Navy Officers inform the fishermen about the territorial water borders ? Or why aren’t the borders clearly marked ?
  • If Sri Lanka is arresting the Indian fishermen purposely, India should strongly protest against such action !
