Justin Welby, head of the Church of England, resigns !

Accused of failing to handle a case of abuse in the church !

London – Justin Welby, archbishop of Canterbury and head of the Church of England, has resigned for failing to handle abuse in the church. He had failed to properly investigate allegations of abuse committed by a church volunteer at the church’s Christian summer camps few decades ago. An independent report was recently published, in which Welby, the spiritual leader of 85 million global Anglicans communion around the world was accused of failing to stop the person behind abuse in the church. The report had criticized him for improperly handling allegations of misconduct committed in the 1970s.

1. Welby said in his resignation letter, “I hope that the decision to resign will make clear how seriously the Church of England understands the need for change and it underscores our commitment in creating a safer church and as I step down I express that I share the grief of all abuse victims.

2. The report said John Smith, the church’s British volunteer, physically and sexually abused more than 100 children and young people in a brutal and horrific manner over 40 years. Smith died in 2018.

3. Smith was chairman of the Ivern Trust, which funded Christian camps in England. Welby served him as a dormitory officer before his appointment as bishop.
