‘Gurupournima’ is an important day in Hindu traditions especially to express gratitude to one’s Guru.
Arjun with the blessings of Shrikrushna, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with the blessings of Sant Tukaram and Samartha Ramdas Swami re-established and built the Divine Rule. This shows the significance of the Guru-Disciple tradition. It was a tradition in Hindu Dharma to go to a ‘Gurukul (Guru’s Ashram)’ and seek His guidance to fulfill various goals of life such as imbibe moral values, knowledge of various subjects, abide by Dharma and God -realisation. However, later the Indian Government adopted Macaulay’s education system and discarded this tradition.
It has become necessary to nurture the ‘Guru-Disciple’ tradition, and Gurupournima is the right occasion to remember and follow this tradition. It has become imperative for Hindus to unite under the blessings of Gurus (Saints) to combat constant attacks on the Nation & Dharma.
