7,442 Madrasas to be invigilated in Uttar Pradesh

Several Madarasas exist only on paper

Editorial comment

Crores of rupees are allocated to upgrade and modernise madarasas, but they never yield anything. Several instances of corruption also surface very often. Considering the irregularities, steps must be taken to shut down madarasas.

Lucknow (UP) – State Government has ordered a probe into 7,442 madarasas. Several Districts in UP have official records of madarasas but they only exist on paper. To verify any wrongdoings, an investigation has been ordered by the Government.

Central Government is implementing an exclusive scheme for the betterment of madarasas, this includes the provision of modern education to the students of madarasas. For this, 3 external teachers are appointed for each and every madarasa. Teachers with a minimum degree of qualification are given Rs 6,000, whereas teachers with higher education are paid Rs 12,000. Uttar Pradesh Government has granted additional allowances to these external teachers. Currently, these madarasas employ 21,126 teachers. The issue of bogus madarasas is quite old; in 2013, it was found that 118 madarasas existed only on paper.
