Agartala (Tripura) – Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has sparked a controversy after he asked civil service officials and executives to work for the people without ‘worrying about contempt of Court’ as the Government is not run by the Court. He said, ‘Many officers tell me that they cannot do anything for fear of contempt of Court. Why such fear ? The Court passes judgements, but the Police take action, and the Police are under my control. How many people have been imprisoned for contempt of Court so far ? I will go to jail before you in contempt of Court case.

Putting someone in jail is not easy. The work of the Police is remembered as per the order given by the Chief Minister. If the Court asks the Police to put a person in jail, the Police should say, “The accused was not found”. After all, power is in the hands of the father, isn’t it ?’ CM Deb made these statements while addressing a conference. The opposition parties have criticised the CM heavily after the video of his speech became viral. The question being raised is, ‘How can the Chief Minister himself insult the judiciary ?’

Reacting to the comments, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee claimed that Deb has mocked judiciary and democracy as well. He also asked whether the Supreme Court will take cognisance of Deb’s comments that reflect such grave disrespect.
