Moscow – Following opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s arrest, lakhs of people took to the streets in Russia to protest against Russian President Vladimir Putin. People from about 100 cities across Russia are protesting the arrest. In Moscow, riot police were seen beating the protestors and dragging them to the police vans. Police have detained more than 3,000 protestors. People also staged protests in distant areas like Siberia and Saint Petersburg. University students and senior citizens alike are involved in the protests. Navalny’s wife, Yulia, also participated in a rally and was briefly held by the authorities.

Navalny was arrested on 17th of January in Moscow. He is seen as a strong critic of Putin. In August 2020, Navalny was poisoned on a flight with a drink spiked with poison. His health deteriorated . After regaining his health, Navalny sought asylum in Germany. He then travelled from Berlin to Moscow on 17th Januarywhere he was immediately arrested at the airport.
