The incidents of thefts in the temples under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India provide a glimpse of the department’s work.

Bhubaneswar (Odisha) – Miscreants have stolen 22 antique idols from the ancient and historical Daksheshwar Temple at Banpur from Khordha District of Odisha. The idols, which include those of of Maa Kanaka Durga, Gopinath Dev, Kaliyugeswar Dev, Chandrasekhar Dev etc were all of Ashtadhatu (a precious alloy of gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead, tin, iron and mercury). An FIR has been lodged in this case. The temple is under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India.

The miscreants entered the temple by breaking open the main door. The temple priest noticed this when he came in for the morning worship. There are a total of 31 idols out of which robbers decamped with 22.
