Karnataka to ban the sale of pizza-burger near schools

Karnataka Government's decision to instill healthy eating habits in children

Mangaluru (Karnataka) – The sale of pizza and burgers near schools will soon be banned to inculcate the habit of consuming nutritious food among students, announced U.T. Khader, Health and Family Welfare Minister of Karnataka here.

Speaking to reporters, Khader said that the reason behind many diseases among students is the consumption of junk food. Nutritious food is essential for the physical and mental development of students, and if restrictions are imposed on such foods at the school level, students will inculcate healthy habits from an early age. The government will make food safety norms more stringent and will also make food testing laboratories more capable. Work has also been undertaken to modernise existing laboratories and set up state-of-the-art laboratories through public-private partnerships to control adulterated and substandard food. Khader also clarified that the order banning junk food will be circulated soon.

Editorial Perspective

  • There is no comparison between Indian diet that keeps us physically and mentally fit, and the Western diet that ruins our health. Will Indians ever realize the importance of Indian diet?
  • If such a decision can be taken in a Congress-ruled State, why is it not taken in States ruled by other parties?
