Shia community members perform ‘matam’ at Mumbai airport premises

Permission granted for the ‘matam’ ritual within the airport premises draws criticism !

(‘Matam’ is a Muslim mourning practice in which grief over a death, tragedy, or sacrifice is publicly expressed by striking one’s chest.)

Mumbai – A video has surfaced showing some members of the Shia community performing ‘matam’ within the premises of an airport. It is not yet clear at which airport the incident took place. However, if the video is indeed from the Mumbai airport premises, the airport authorities have not issued any official clarification or statement regarding when the event took place or whether prior permission had been obtained for it.

‘Matam’ is a religious mourning tradition observed primarily by Shia Muslims. It is performed to commemorate the sacrifice of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and his companions in the seventh-century Battle of Karbala. Through this practice, grief and solidarity are expressed over their suffering.

Many people have raised questions on social media over how such an activity was permitted within airport premises. They have demanded stricter security measures and greater vigilance at airports.
