Chief Justice Surya Kant’s statement on the petition against the Cockroach Janata Party campaign

New Delhi – A public interest petition had been filed in the Supreme Court claiming that the judiciary was being unfairly defamed through the establishment of the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ on social media by allegedly misinterpreting a statement made by Chief Justice Surya Kant. However, the Court refused to grant an urgent hearing on the petition. “Do not look at this issue so emotionally,” the Chief Justice advised the advocates.

During a hearing on 15 May, Chief Justice Surya Kant had strongly criticised tendencies that malign the judicial system. He said that there are certain “parasites” in society who continuously attack the system. “Do you wish to go and sit among them?” he asked. He further remarked that some youngsters are like “cockroaches”, who fail to find work in the legal field or elsewhere; such individuals then become journalists, social media activists, or Right to Information activists, and begin mudslinging at everyone.
