Crude bomb hurled in Murshidabad; several injured

First phase of West Bengal Assembly elections

Kolkata – Voting for the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections was held on April 23rd. Late at night, a crude bomb was reportedly hurled in Naoda area of Murshidabad, leaving several people injured.

The following morning, when Humayun Kabir, chief of the Ajana Jan Unnayan Party (AJUP), arrived at the spot, he faced opposition. This led to a clash between his supporters and workers of the All India Trinamool Congress. Police intervened and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. Following the incident, Kabir has launched a protest at the location.

EVM malfunction causes chaos in Malda

At a polling booth in Malda, a malfunction in the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) triggered unrest. Voters surrounded election officials and staged a protest.

In the first phase, voting was conducted for 152 seats, while polling for the remaining 142 seats will take place on April 29th. The results are scheduled to be announced on May 4th.

BJP candidate assaulted

Suvendu Sarkar, a BJP candidate representing the Kumarganj constituency in South Midnapore, was allegedly attacked. A video of the incident shows him running to protect himself, accompanied by his security guard. Despite this, he was reportedly assaulted by a mob.

The identities of the attackers have not yet been confirmed. The Election Commission of India has ordered immediate action and directed that all individuals seen in the video be arrested.
