Raipur (Chhattisgarh) – A Hindu woman, identified as 19-year-old Kavita Das, was  found hanging  under suspicious circumstances at her boyfriend Mahfuz Khan’s house in the Santoshi Nagar area of Raipur on Sunday night. The case has created panic in the locality, with the woman’s family accusing the man of harassment and murder.

Kavita’s family, however, has strongly objected to the suicide angle. They have accused Mahfuz Khan of repeatedly pressuring her to marry  him, which they say pushed her into severe mental stress. The family also claimed that he used to physically assault her and even streamed such incidents on Instagram, which added to her trauma. Calling it a clear case of murder, they have demanded strict punishment.

Considering the sensitivity of the case, the police have taken Mahfuz Khan into custody and are questioning him. Officials say every possible angle is being examined to find out what
exactly happened that night.

The Government should make efforts to try such accused in a fast-track court and ensure he receives the death penalty.
