Origin, Characteristics and Spiritual Science of Numbers

Research conducted by Maharshi Adhyatma Vishwavidyalay

Question asked to the individual who is able to perceive and gain knowledge from the subtle dimension : Are the vibrations of numbers and the vibrations of their pronunciations complementary to each other ? For example, are the vibrations of the number ‘1’ and the word ‘one’ complementary to each other ? If so, what is the spiritual science behind this ?

Answer

1. The relationship between Numbers and Kundalini Energy !

At a person’s Muladhar chakra (root chakra), there exists a subtle lotus. Within it is the numerical energy of Goddess Saraswati also called ‘Beeja Shakti’ (core energy). From this numerical energy, nine subtle petals of the lotus are created. This subtle lotus is associated sequentially with the numbers 0 to 9. Among these, ‘0’ is related to the central part of the lotus, while the numbers 1 to 9 correspond to its nine petals.

2. Characteristics of Numbers

Within the numerical energy present in the lotus at the Muladhar chakra of a person exist the three gunas (Trigunas) and the five cosmic elements (Panchatattvas). The functional expansion of this energy manifests as the numbers from 0 to 9. These numbers form the foundation of mathematics. Therefore, numbers are referred to as the ‘nine roots’ of mathematics. The gradual expansion of this numerical energy results in the various numbers.

3. Creation of the Science of numbers through Goddess Saraswati

The numerical energy present in a person’s Muladhar chakra is a manifestation of Goddess Saraswati. Within this numerical energy exist two sub-energies of Goddess Saraswati, namely ‘Ganini’ and ‘Malini’.

3 A. Function of the ‘Ganini’ Energy of Goddess Saraswati : The energy that determines the sequence of numbers is called ‘Ganini Shakti’. When the numerical energy in the lotus at the person’s Muladhar chakra manifests, gradually the petals related to numbers begin to blossom one by one.

When the first subtle petal of the lotus at the Muladhar chakra blossoms, due to the the Ganini energy, that petal is number ‘1’. Thereafter, another petal is formed from the numerical energy, through the Ganini energy, so it becomes number ‘2’. Subsequently, the petals that are formed become numbers 3 to 9 respectively. In this way, a nine-petalled lotus is established at the person’s Muladhar chakra.

3 B. Function of the ‘Malini’ energy of Goddess Saraswati : Through the ‘Malini’ energy of Goddess Saraswati, the series of arithmetic operations such as numbers, multiplication, division, subtraction, etc., came into being. Therefore, this energy was called ‘Malini’. Through this energy, the knowledge of mathematics was imparted to the Sages through the subtle realm.

4. The remarkable mission of the Sages (Rishis) regarding numbers !

4 A. The Sages attained complete knowledge about the numbers at the Muladhar chakra : The Sages of the Satyayug (The first in the cycle of four Eras since the origin of the Universe) received subtle knowledge about the numerical energy at the Muladhar chakra in a person’s Kundalini, the numbers that arise from it, the properties of numbers, and the functioning of the two energies associated with numbers namely ‘Ganini’ and ‘Malini’.

4 B. The Sages determined the shapes and pronunciations of numbers through Divine knowledge : At the lotus in the Muladhar chakra, the Sages did not perceive any particular form within the numerical energy. Since nothing was visible there, they assigned the number ‘0’, calling it ‘Shunya’ (zero). After this, They perceived the numbers 1 in the first petal, 2 in the second petal, and so on, up to 9 in the ninth petal.

First, through Divine knowledge, the Sages discovered the word ‘Shunya’, whose vibrations corresponded with the number 0. They then studied subtly whether the fire energy was available at the Manipur chakra which would help the word Shunya to get manifested and whether it could easily emerge further through the vocal apparatus. After this subtle study, the Sages assigned the word ‘Shunya’ to the number 0, and then determined both its form (symbol) and pronunciation. The same process was subsequently followed by the Sages for the numbers 1 to 9.

4 C. Creation of the numbers from 10 to 100 : The Sages first determined the forms and pronunciations of the numbers 0 to 9. These numbers then began to be used in the daily life of people of that time. As time passed, the population and mutual interactions increased. At that stage, some Sages used the numbers 0 to 9 as the basis to create and record the numbers 10 to 100, for the purposes of ‘practical dealings and education.’

  • Subtle : The gross (physical) aspects of an individual are the five sense organs - the nose, ears, eyes, tongue and skin. These five senses, beyond the mind and intellect, are ‘subtle’. These ‘subtle’ sensations are felt by some people who have advanced in their spiritual practice. Various Scriptures contain references to subtle knowledge.
  • Seeing, hearing in the subtle, etc. (Receiving knowledge through the five subtle sense organs) : The subtle vision of some seekers is awakened; meaning, they can perceive what the physical eyes cannot see; some seekers can hear sounds or words in the subtle.
  • Individual spiritual experiences of seekers published in Sanatan Prabhat are according to the Principle - ‘Where there is bhav (Spiritual emotion), there is God’. It is not that every individual will have similar experiences.
