Law and morality are two different things : Court observes
(Live-in relationship, i.e. living together without marriage)

Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) – The Allahabad High Court has observed that a married man having a ‘live-in relationship’ with another woman cannot be considered a crime. While making this observation, the Court clarified that morality and law are two different things. The couple living in a ‘live-in’ relationship had sought protection from the Court in the wake of threats from the woman’s family.
The Court further said that if no crime is proven under the law, then social sentiment and morality cannot influence the Court’s decisions to protect the rights of citizens.
The woman’s family had argued in the Court that it is a crime for a person to be in a relationship with another woman after being married. The Court recorded the above opinion on this. A division bench of Justice J.J. Munir and Justice Tarun Saxena heard the matter. After this, the Police have entrusted the responsibility of the couple’s security to the Superintendent of Police of Shahjahanpur.
Editorial PerspectiveDue to such judicial stands, it will not take long for the Hindu family values to collapse and the culture to deteriorate. Most Hindus feel that India should not be westernized. Therefore, it is the humble expectation of the people that the Supreme Court should take note of this decision and try to save family values. |
