Harvard University apologises over offensive image depicting a Hindu individual circulated in a Sanskrit context !

Washington, D.C. (USA) – Harvard University has issued an apology regarding a controversial social media post shared by its Department of South Asian Studies. The post featured an allegedly offensive and Hindu-phobic image connected to a Sanskrit programme, which drew strong objections from members of the Hindu community. The image, used to represent an introductory Sanskrit course, faced widespread criticism on social media platforms.

University accused of promoting Hinduphobia

The Coalition of Hindus of North America accused Harvard University of openly encouraging Hinduphobia and claimed that the image misrepresented both Sanskrit and Hinduism. The artwork reportedly resembled a horror-themed illustration, depicting a dark-skinned Hindu figure with a tilak holding a ghost-like form. It was said to be inspired by themes from the Mahabharata and the Raas Leela of Lord Krishna; however, critics stated that its presentation was disrespectful. The artwork, titled “Master of Puppets,” was created by Aniruddha Sainath.

We remain fully committed to cultural traditions – Harvard University

Following the escalation of the controversy, the Department of South Asian Studies released a statement expressing regret. The department apologised for publishing an insensitive image in connection with the Sanskrit programme. The statement noted that the university has a long tradition of teaching Sanskrit and remains fully committed to the language as well as to the intellectual and cultural traditions associated with it.

The university further clarified that it is reviewing its internal social media procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future and to ensure that published content aligns with the department’s mission and values.

It also stated that the controversial post had no connection with the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute, which operates as an independent and distinct institution within Harvard.

Apology welcomed

The Coalition of Hindus of North America welcomed Harvard University’s apology regarding the controversial post. In a statement shared on the platform “X,” the organisation expressed satisfaction at seeing respect shown toward Sanskrit, one of the world’s oldest languages, noting that Sanskrit has influenced numerous cultures across the globe.
