Claimed it was a measure to protect fruits from rodents

Mumbai – The police have arrested two fruit vendors in Malad for allegedly applying rat poison, identified as ‘ratinol’, to fruits. The accused have been identified as Manoj Kumar Kesarwani and Bipin Kesarwani. The concerned shops have been sealed by the police. The accused claimed that they had resorted to this method to protect the fruits from rodents.
The incident came to light after a complaint was lodged at Malad Police Station by a local resident, Kunal Salunke. He had recorded a video showing the vendors applying the poison and submitted it to the police as evidence. The accused have admitted to applying the substance, and a case has been registered against them.
Editorial PerspectivesIt must be thoroughly verified whether anyone has suffered any health complications after consuming fruits sold by these vendors. Public safety cannot be treated lightly in such matters. If such practices go unchecked, anyone could contaminate fruits or vegetables with harmful substances and sell them to unsuspecting consumers. While fear of legal consequences may deter many from engaging in such acts, deterrence alone is not enough. When responsible citizens raise public health concerns, the authorities must act decisively and implement strict safeguards. |
