Supreme Court refuses to hear plea seeking ban on mosque in the name of Babri

New Delhi – The Supreme Court of India has refused to hear a petition seeking directions to prohibit the construction or naming of any mosque or religious structure after Mughal ruler Babur or the Babri Masjid.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta declined to entertain the plea. Following the Court’s indication that it was not inclined to consider the matter, counsel appearing for the petitioner withdrew the petition.

The petition had also referred to an announcement allegedly made by suspended All India Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir regarding the construction of a replica of the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district of West Bengal.
