Hindu Girls Forced to Remove Chunari, While Girls of Other Religions Allowed to Wear Burqa and Hijab

Incident During Class 12 Examination at Bendale College in Jalgaon

(Hijab: A garment worn by Muslim women to cover the head and neck.)

Devout Hindu organisations submitted a memorandum to the Principal of Bendale College

Jalgaon, Maharashtra – While appearing for the Class 12 examination, some Hindu girl students were allegedly forced by teachers to remove their chunari (odhani). However, students of other religions were permitted to appear for the same examination wearing burqas and hijabs.

In this regard, local Hindutva organisations submitted a memorandum to the Principal of Bendale College and the District Collector of Jalgaon. The District Collector assured that the matter would be verified and appropriate action taken. (Not merely assurances, but immediate action should be taken against the concerned teachers. Until concrete action is ensured, Hindutva organisations must continue to follow up on the matter. – Editor)

A complaint was also lodged with the college administration. The Principal stated that appropriate action would be taken against the concerned teachers and that they would be counselled. He further clarified that there is no official rule in the college prohibiting the wearing of an odhani; therefore, no restrictions would be imposed on students.

The Hindutva representatives present also demanded that statewide action be taken to ensure that no female student faces discrimination on the basis of religion, culture, or personal attire.

Teacher Allegedly Asked Students to Throw Chunari in the Dustbin

The concerned teacher reportedly made objectionable and insulting remarks to the students, stating, “Do you not understand that you are not supposed to wear an odhani during examinations? Throw it in the dustbin.” (Why do such teachers not dare to make similar remarks to Muslim girl students? Hindu girl students, too, must show kshatra-bhav (a spirit of courage) and raise their voice against such statements. – Editor)

Editorial Perspective

Legal action should be initiated against such teachers for making insulting and objectionable statements.

Editorial perspectives

  • Is Jalgaon in India, or in Bangladesh or Pakistan, that such incidents occur ?
  • Why are women’s rights activists who openly support Muslim girls wearing hijabs now silent about this incident in Jalgaon ? Hindus must hold them accountable.
  • This outrageous incident is an attack on Hindu Dharma. Hindutva organisations across the country must raise their voice against it.
