A case registered against 23 people for protesting in support of Palestine

Protest on Jangli Maharaj Road without police permission

Pune – The Deccan Police have registered a case against 23 activists of an organisation for staging a protest in support of Palestine without obtaining police permission. The protest was held on 15thFebruary near Shri Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden on Jangli Maharaj Road. The activists were detained and brought to Deccan Police Station, where they were later released after being issued notices. Police constable Nalin Yerunkar has filed a complaint in this regard at Deccan Police Station.

On the occasion of the Municipal Corporation’s foundation day, a flower exhibition had been organised at Shri Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden, drawing a large number of visitors. In view of the heavy public turnout, the police had denied permission for the protest planned by the concerned organisation, Deccan Police officials stated.

Editorial perspectives

  • Merely registering a case is not enough; it is essential to identify under whose backing such protests are being carried out and ensure that all those responsible face strict punishment.
  • Protests are being held in support of Palestine without police permission, which suggests that the police have little or no deterrent control over the demonstrators. If they are not firmly restrained in time, would it be wrong to say that the same protesters may tomorrow not hesitate to engage in extremist or even terrorist activities in the country?
