Rise in complaints in last four years

New Delhi – The Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal informed the Parliament that in the last ten years, 8630 complaints have been received against the sitting judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts. All the complaints have been forwarded to the Chief Justice of India (CJI). There has been rise in such complaints in the last four years. Out of the total complaints received, 50% were received during 2022 to 2025.
Process to classify Complaints
The Union Law Minister Meghwal stated that there is a fixed process of the Supreme Court for examining the complaints received against judges. After following the ‘In-house’ procedure set by the Supreme Court, CJI takes note of the complaints received against sitting justices of the Supreme Court and chief judges of High Courts. Similarly, the chief judges of High Courts examine the complaints received against the sitting judges in their Courts. The complaints received by the Government are also forwarded to CJI or the respective chief judge for further action.
Autonomy of the Judiciary and internal system
The Law Minister Meghwal further explained that the autonomy of the judiciary is enshrined in the Constitution of India. The complaints received against judges are handled by the judiciary through an ‘In-house’ mechanism. This information was given by the Law Minister in the written reply to a question raised in the Parliament. In 1997, the Supreme Court devised such in-house procedure adopting two resolutions re-defining the values of judicial life and laying down certain standards and principles to be observed by judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts.
Centralised public grievances redress and monitoring system
In addition, the Government also accepts complaints under its centralised public grievances redress and monitoring system. It is an online platform where people can file complaints against any Government Authority related to providing services. This portal (website) is connected to all ministries and departments of the Central and State Governments.
