Dhaka (Bangladesh) – A 62-year-old Hindu trader, Sushen Chandra Sarkar, was murdered by unidentified assailants on the night of 9 February in Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of the Hindu minority in the country.
Earlier in the same district, a Hindu youth named Dipu Chandra Das was allegedly burnt alive by a Muslim mob, intensifying fears within the community.
Sushen Sarkar was a grain merchant and a resident of Dakkhin Kanda village. He owned a shop named ‘Bhai Bhai Enterprise’ at Bogra Bazar intersection. According to reports, at around 11 pm, unidentified attackers assaulted him with sharp weapons. After the attack, he was allegedly locked inside his shop and the shutter was pulled down. When his family members went searching for him and reached the shop, they found him lying in a pool of blood.
17 Hindus killed
Bangladesh is scheduled to hold general elections for Parliament on 12 February. In the backdrop of the upcoming elections, Hindu organisations have alleged that members of the Hindu community are being targeted. Between December 2025 and January 2026, 17 Hindus have reportedly been killed.
According to the 2022 Census, Hindus constitute approximately 8 per cent of Bangladesh’s population.
