Religious sentiments hurt by portrayal of Shankasur Deity in advertisement of the web series ‘Devkhel’

Complaint filed at Guhagar Police Station

(Web series means a series broadcast online)

Mumbai – A serious allegation has been made that a ‘teaser’ (a short part of the film/trailer) of the ‘Devkhel’ web series on ‘Zee 5’, an ‘OTT platform’ (an arrangement for watching entertainment programs), aired an insulting and religiously hurting episode about Shankasura, a regional Deity worshipped with great faith in the Guhagar area. In this regard, Sanket Arun Salvi, President of ‘Guhagar Bar Association’ and Coordinator of ‘Aaplam (our) Guhagar’, filed a complaint at Guhagar Police Station with the B.N.S. and the Information Technology Act.

The citizens of Guhagar were warned to remove the currently running ‘promo’ (short publicity video) immediately or else they would march to the office.

Citizen filing a complaint at Guhagar Police Station

In the ‘teaser’ of this series, an attempt has been made to show the regional Deity Shankasura as cruel, inhuman and promoting superstition. In particular, it is alleged that dialogues such as ‘Shankasur punishes, kills, a tradition of committing a murder every year during Holi’, hurt the religious sentiments of the devotees. Shankasura Dev is an ancient place of worship in the Guhagar area, where thousands of devotees visit him with devotion during the Shimgotsava.

The advertisement, released on 21 January, 2026, has been viewed by more than 8 lakh viewers so far. This objectionable video has been circulated across the country. The complaint further states that the matter generated discontent in society and posed a danger to law and order.

Editorial Perspective

Hindus are not alert; hence anybody dares to ridicule Hindu Deities. The time has come for Hindus to generate a sense of dignity for Hinduism that would make such people think before ridiculing their Deities in future.
