Non-Muslims Cannot Become MPs in a Muslim-Majority Country

Statement by Jamaat-e-Islami Leader Afzal Hossain in Bangladesh

Dhaka (Bangladesh) — Afzal Hossain, a leader of the extremist political party Jamaat-e-Islami, stated that only Muslims should become Members of Parliament in the country and that Bangladesh should be governed according to Sharia law. He made these remarks while addressing an election campaign meeting in Barguna.

Hossain further said

that in a country where nearly 80 per cent of the population is Muslim, there should be no MP who goes against religious values. “Do you want governance based on the Quran or some other system?” he asked. He added that Jamaat-e-Islami would work towards establishing a Quran-guided system of governance in Bangladesh.

Editorial Perspectives

  • Jamaat-e-Islami Is an Extremist Party, and With the Possibility of Its Participation in Power in the Upcoming Elections, What Lies Ahead for Bangladesh Is Becoming Clear. It Should Not Be Surprising If Tomorrow, After Coming to Power, This Very Party Says, “No Non-Muslim Has the Right Even to Live in the Country.”
  • One can only imagine the consequences if someone were to say, “In Hindu-majority India, no one except Hindus can become Members of Parliament.”
