1. Bangladesh’s general election are scheduled for February 12, and Hasina’s party – the Awami League – has been barred from contesting. In her first public address from India, exiled former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina on Friday called on citizens to rise up against the interim administration headed by Muhammad Yunus, saying that it is incapable of delivering free and fair elections. The Awami League chief, who has been living in self-imposed exile in India since fleeing Bangladesh on 5 August 2024, amid widespread student-led protests, made the remarks through a pre-recorded audio message.
2. In this grave hour, the entire nation must rise united and galvanised by the spirit of our great Liberation War.
3. Sheikh Hasina went on to say, Human Rights have been trampled in Bangladesh. The freedom of the press does not exist now in Bangladesh. Violence, harassment, sexual atrocities against women continue to happen in the country. Injustice against religious minorities continue to happen and there is a breakdown of Law and Order in Bangladesh.
4. Calling for international involvement, Hasina said the UN should be asked to conduct a new and truly impartial investigation into the events of the past year to promote reconciliation and healing while rejecting the selfish pursuit of vengeance. She called Yunus a ‘corrupt, power-hungry traitor’ and ‘stooge of a foreign power’.
