New Delhi – Supreme Court advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain has filed a defamation case against Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav at the Patiala House Court in Delhi. The petition has been filed over alleged derogatory remarks made through a social media post. As compensation, Jain has sought only ₹1 as symbolic damages.

The petition states that despite sending a legal notice, Akhilesh Yadav neither expressed regret nor offered an apology for his actions. Therefore, the court has been requested to deliver justice in this matter.

What is the case ?

Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain has alleged that in November 2024, Akhilesh Yadav made three remarks targeting him. These remarks were related to a civil appeal concerning the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.

On 24 November 2024, during a court-ordered survey conducted by a judicial commissioner at the Shahi Jama Masjid, violence had broken out. Social media handles of the Samajwadi Party held Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain responsible for this violence. Jain stated in the petition that he was only performing his duties in accordance with the court’s order. He further claimed that the violent mob had gathered with the intention of attacking him.

According to the petition, the Samajwadi Party also alleged that the violence occurred because Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain had raised slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” while going for the survey. Jain has stated that Akhilesh Yadav has no evidence to support the claim that the violence was triggered due to these slogans.
