Muslim man rapes a mentally ill Hindu woman in Assam

The accused attacked after snatching a police officer’s gun

Kokrajhar (Assam) – On January 10, in the district, a mentally ill Hindu woman was taken to a labor camp set up for road construction and raped by a Muslim man named Rafikul Islam. As soon as information about the incident was received, local residents took the victim to the labor camp, where the woman identified the accused. Enraged citizens assaulted the accused, creating tension in the area. Police rushed to the spot and arrested Rafikul Islam. According to police, while taking the accused to Kokrajhar, he attempted to escape under the pretext of using the restroom. He snatched a police officer’s firearm and attacked them. In retaliatory firing by the police, Rafikul was shot in the leg and injured.

Even after the arrest, public anger did not subside. A large number of locals gathered outside the Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station. Protesters blocked the Kokrajhar–Bilasipara road and demanded strict punishment for the accused. Some also demanded that the accused be handed over to them.
