Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam has made an outrageous statement claiming that “the killings of Hindus taking place in Bangladesh are minor and trivial incidents. Incidents of violence are not confined to any one community. Even Muslims are not safe under the interim government of Muhammad Yunus. Muslims too are being killed and raped.” Fakhrul Islam further alleged that “all this is a narrative created by the media.”

Speaking on India’s foreign policy, Fakhrul stated that India should establish contact with political parties other than the Awami League.

Editorial Perspective

With the Bangladesh Nationalist Party likely to secure a majority and come to power in the elections scheduled to be held on 12 February  in Bangladesh, the prevailing picture suggests that the atrocities currently being committed against Hindus will continue unabated. Those perpetrating such acts will face no action. This is precisely what Mirza Islam is making clear through his statement.
