Report mentions :
1. ‘First, accusations of contempt on social media, then immediate arrests, then gathering crowds and attacking Hindu settlements’, is the method used every time by religious fanatics to attack. Now, blasphemy allegations have become a weapon to spread fear and suppress minorities.
2. These incidents are spread across more than 30 Districts of the country. Such crimes have been reported in many areas like Rangpur, Chandpur, Chittagong, Dinajpur, Khulna, Comilla, Ghazipur, Tangail and Sylhet.
3. The occurrence of such a large number of incidents of the same type indicates that these are not just isolated incidents but are becoming a pattern of targeting minorities.
4. Many cases are started on social media, especially Facebook. Often such allegations are made on posts that are either fake or are posted after the account is hacked. Often, a case is registered on verbal allegations alone without any substantive investigation. Still, the Police take immediate action under pressure from the mob.
5. More than 90% of the accused in these cases are Hindus. Many of the victims are minors, aged between 15 and 17 years.
6. In several cases, students have been booked under the Cyber Security Act. Students from Khulna University, North South University and other educational institutions have been suspended, expelled from colleges or sent to Police custody.
7. In some places, violence does not stop even after the Police arrest the accused. Mobs attack Hindu houses and shops. This raises the question of whether the administration can protect the minorities or not.
