‘Kill 2 lakh Hindus’, says a signboard found in Chittagong

Fear of Hindu genocide in Bangladesh ahead of the February Elections

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Even after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina Government last year, attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh continue unabated. For a brief period, there was a decline in violence; however, after the killing of anti-India leader Sharif Usman Hadi, attacks on Hindus have once again intensified. Since then, Hindus across the country have been living under a constant shadow of fear.

In one incident, Dipu Chandra Das was brutally beaten to death by a mob on the basis of a false allegation of insulting Prophet Muhammad, and his body was later set on fire. Subsequently, another Hindu was also killed. Now, disturbing signboards have come to light that openly speak of mass killings of Hindus.

In the Raozan sub-District of Chittagong, a signboard was put up claiming that there is a plan to kill 2 lakh people belonging to the Hindu and Buddhist communities. The Sunday Guardian has published a photograph of this signboard, which was seized from the same area where Hindu houses had earlier been set ablaze. Local Jihadi elements are reportedly linking the murder of Usman Hadi to India and are taking revenge on local Hindus.

1. Parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held in Bangladesh in February this year, and the Awami League has been barred from contesting the elections.

2. A few days ago, in Raozan, a Muslim mob set fire to the house of Anil Shil. The house was locked from outside and attempts were made to burn it down with the entire family inside. The family narrowly escaped with their lives.

3. It has been reported that several other Hindu houses in the Raozan area were similarly set on fire. This information was shared by Kushal Barun Chakraborty, a representative of the Bangladeshi organisation ‘Sammilita Sanatani Jagaran Jote’, after visiting the affected families.

4. Speaking about the signboard found in Raozan, he said that the Police have seized it and that the date 13th December was written on it. The message stated that on that day, there was a plan to kill 2 lakh people from the Hindu and Buddhist communities in the Raozan area.

5. The signboard also stated that not even a trace of these communities would be allowed to remain there. Although the signboard has been seized, no concrete measures have been taken to ensure the safety of Hindus.

Who will ensure the safety of Hindus ?

After coming to power, the Jamaat-e-Islami Party has announced that it will turn the country into an Islamic Republic. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the Jatiya Party are all regarded as Parties with extremist ideologies.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Tarique Rahman, who returned from London after 17 years, has also remained silent on the violence against Hindus. This clearly indicates his unwillingness to upset extremist groups. In such a situation, who will take responsibility for the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh ? This has emerged as a grave and pressing question.

Editorial Perspectives

  • In 1971, around 30 lakh people were killed in Bangladesh, and lakhs of women were raped. A majority of the victims were Hindus. Compared to that, the figure of 2 lakh can only be small. Moreover, after such large-scale killings in 1971, India had intervened. If a similar situation arises again, it should not come as a surprise.
  • It is precisely because of the continuous massacre of Hindus in Bangladesh that their population has declined from 15% in 1971 to just 8% today. Even this population may not survive in the future. This grim reality persists because Hindus across the world have remained inactive.
  • Unity amongst Hindus and Hindu Organisations is essential to overcome this calamity !
