Extremists try to stop Procession Taken Out by Sikhs in Auckland (New Zealand)

Auckland (New Zealand) – Members of a far-Right group from south Auckland created disruption in the religious (‘Nagar-kirtan’) procession taken out by the Sikh community by staging demonstrations on their way. Brian Tamaki is stated to be the leader of the organisation and is associated with ‘Destiny Church’. The procession had to be halted for some time due to the demonstrations.

1. On 20.12.2025, Nanaksar Sikh Gurudwara planned to take out ‘Nagar Kirtan’ procession in Manurewa area of Auckland.

2. Sikh devotees had joined the procession in large number along with ‘Nihang (Warrior)’ Sikhs wearing blue clothes and carrying weapons)’. The demonstrators, however, blocked their way and started raising slogans.

3. They were holding banners with anti-India matter written on them. They raised slogans as ‘This is not India; this is New Zealand’.

4.The demonstrators were wearing T shirts with ‘New Zealand First’ written on them. The local Maori community performed their traditional ‘Haka’ dance in front of the procession in protest.

5. Timely intervention of the Police brought the situation under control as the Police realised the possibility of tension in the area. The organisers of the procession have strongly expressed their displeasure over the incident since they had obtained prior permission of the local administration for taking out the procession.

Condemnation by Sikhs

‘Akal Takhta’s acting ‘Jathedar’ (Chief of Gurudwara), Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj stated, in response to the turn of events, “It is an unfortunate incident. Sikh community has been legally living in New Zealand for many years and has been contributing to the progress of the country. Required measures should be undertaken for the protection of Sikh community.” ‘Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Samiti’s President Harjinder Singh and ‘Shiromani Akali Dal’s President Sukhbir Singh have also condemned this incident, demanding secure environment for religious freedom of the Sikh community.

Editorial Perspective 

Sikhs and Hindus are now targeted even in New Zealand along with Pakistan, Bangladesh and Australia. The Government needs to take a serious note of the same and take stringent steps for their protection.
