Will cut off northeast region from India: Hasnat Abdullah

Daydreaming and provocative statement by Hasnat Abdullah, leader of Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – Hasnat Abdullah, a leader of Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party, has made a sharp and objectionable statement against India. Abdullah, one of the key instigators behind the violent agitation against Sheikh Hasina, has openly threatened to break up India. Speaking at an all-party protest meeting held at the Shaheed Minar,

he said that if any attempt is made to destabilise Bangladesh, the response will be to separate India’s ‘Seven Sisters’ (the seven states of Northeast India).

The meeting was organised by the Inquilab Manch to protest a deadly attack on its spokesperson Sharif Usman Hadi. Addressing the gathering, Hasnat Abdullah, without naming anyone, made the following allegations:

1. Certain elements are conspiring to create instability in Bangladesh and disrupt the electoral process by providing shelter and assistance from across the border.

2. Those involved in the attack on Usman Hadi are receiving support from India.

3. If forces that do not respect Bangladesh’s sovereignty, capability, voting rights, and human rights are given shelter, Bangladesh will retaliate. Destabilising Bangladesh will have serious consequences for the entire region.

4. If Bangladesh becomes unstable, the flames of the movement will spread across the border.

5. The Yunus government must take a clear stand regarding India. India should no longer be viewed merely as a neighboring country.

We will not allow India to establish dominance over Bangladesh: Nahid Islam

At the meeting, party convenor Nahid Islam stated that India would not be allowed to establish dominance in Bangladesh through any individual, institution, business group, or intellectual. He issued a threat saying that “Delhi’s throne will be burnt in this country.”

Editorial Perspectives

  • A fringe leader from a country that came into existence because of India is making such statements and rendering himself ridiculous. The situation has now arisen where India should take direct action, teach Bangladesh a lesson, and integrate it with India.
  • It must be remembered that on 16 December 1971, Pakistan surrendered solely due to India, leading to the creation of Bangladesh. At that very time, India could have chosen to integrate Bangladesh instead of creating a separate nation—but it did not. Nahid Islam should remember this.
