INDIA Alliance demands impeachment of Madras High Court Judge G.R. Swaminathan after his order permitting lamp-lighting!

Hinduphobic political parties in uproar after Hindus were allowed to light lamps on a sacred hill!

(Impeachment: A process by which a person holding office is stripped of all powers and responsibilities)

New Delhi: The INDIA Alliance has taken an aggressive stand against Madras High Court Judge G.R. Swaminathan. On 9th December, more than 100 MPs from the alliance submitted a written request to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, demanding that impeachment proceedings be initiated against him.

Justice Swaminathan had not only ordered that the traditional lighting of lamps be carried out at the disputed temple site but had also stated that if officials failed to comply, devotees themselves should be permitted to light the lamps — with the state ensuring their security. Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK was furious with this decision.

Allegations of bias against Justice Swaminathan!

In their submission to the Speaker, opposition MPs accused Justice Swaminathan of misconduct. According to reports, the MPs raised questions regarding his impartiality, transparency, and adherence to secular principles. They claimed he shows preferential treatment towards senior advocates of a particular community and decides cases influenced by certain political ideologies, thereby violating the secular spirit of the Constitution.

The impeachment request was signed by more than 100 MPs, including DMK’s Kanimozhi, party leader in Lok Sabha T.R. Baalu, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, and Congress leader Priyanka Vadra.

What is the exact issue?

Order on lighting lamps at the Thirupparankundram hill!

Justice Swaminathan had directed the authorities of the Subramanya Swamy Temple to arrange the lighting of lamps on the sacred Deepastambha at Thirupparankundram Hill in Madurai district. The site has long been disputed between the temple and an adjacent dargah. In his 1st December 2025 order, he made it clear that the responsibility of lighting the lamps rests with the temple.

Permission to devotees if the order is not obeyed!

The High Court also stated that lighting the lamps would not affect the rights of the dargah or the Muslim community. When the state ignored the order, the Court issued a fresh directive on 3rd December, allowing devotees to light the lamps themselves and instructing that CISF personnel be deployed for their protection. A contempt notice was also issued for non-compliance.

Opposing this, the Stalin-led Tamil Nadu government first approached the Supreme Court and then, under its leadership, the INDIA Alliance decided to push forward the impeachment proposal.

Editorial Perspectives

Hinduphobic political parties have now fallen to the level where they believe courts should not deliver justice in favour of Hindus. If such parties were ever to form the government at the Centre, one can only imagine what fate awaited Hindus — which is why the declaration of India as a Hindu Rashtra has become an urgent necessity!
