Sagar (Madhya Pradesh) –  During the digging undertaken for renovation of a mosque at Papat village, Bhagavan Shriram’s idol was found under the ground. A large number of Hindus gathered at the site as the news about Shriram idol spread in the village and immediately ‘puja’ was performed. The idol is in broken state. Activists of devout Hindu organisations reached there and demanded to construct a temple. Later, Muslims also reached the site and that led to creating tension in the area. The Police and administration squad reached the place of the incident to maintain law and order.

Mosque built by destroying temple – Claim by devout Hindu organisations

Devout Hindu organisations have claimed that there was a temple at that place which was demolished to build a mosque. This brought Hindus and Muslims face to face causing stress in the area. The Police and administrative officers, however, had discussions with the leaders from both the sides and tried to maintain order. Though, there is an uneasy calm in the village.

No construction to be held on the land – Sub- divisional magistrate

Sub-divisional Magistrate Naveen Thakur from Banda stated after the idol was found that the locals informed about the idol found during the digging work. It will be verified by the Archaeology Department. The idol will remain in the custody of the Police. The Archaeology Department will check the age of the idol. No construction will be carried out at the site till then. The land is presently under the control of the mosque.

Editorial Perspective

Numerous such incidents show that most of the mosques have been built by demolishing temples. Now, the Union Government should set up a committee to find such Hindu temples destroyed by invaders and try to construct temples at those sites.
