Terrorist doctors planned attacks using drones and rockets

New Delhi – The terror module of radicalised doctors involved in the suicide bombing near the Red Fort had originally planned to carry out attacks using drones and improvised rockets, similar to tactics used by Hamas, according to investigators. Jammu & Kashmir Police have arrested eight individuals so far in connection with the blast.

1. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) uncovered details of the broader plot after arresting Jasir Bilal Wani, also known as Danish, an associate of suicide bomber Dr Umar Un Nabi. Danish, a resident of Qazigund in Jammu & Kashmir’s Anantnag District, was arrested four days ago in Srinagar.

2. Officials reported that Danish had experience in assembling small drone-based weapons. He had provided technical assistance to Dr Umar for terror operations and played an active role in modifying drones and developing crude rocket systems. He possessed technical skills and was working on configuring drones so that electronic parts, motors, and “load capacitors” could be modified to carry explosives.

3. Danish had also attempted to build high-capacity drones equipped with large batteries capable of carrying cameras and heavy bombs. The group reportedly intended to deploy these drones over crowded public spaces to maximise casualties.

4. According to officials, the conspiracy involved a three-stage attack strategy: drone-based strike, rocket-based attack, and finally, a car bomb detonation. This multi-layered plan resembled tactics used by Hamas in Israel and ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

After drone and rocket attack plans failed, terrorists used a car bomb

Investigators discovered that the group had started developing a manual launch tube similar to a rocket launcher. A small explosive device was reportedly tested, indicating an expected range of 300–400 meters. When attempts to perfect drone and rocket-based attacks failed, the group resorted to detonating a car bomb — the blast that shook Delhi.

Video of suicide bomber surfaces

A pre-attack video of Dr Umar Nabi, who executed the suicide bombing near the Red Fort, has emerged. He had recorded the video before the blast, speaking about the suicide mission. In the video, he says people fail to understand what a suicide attack truly is and that no civilised society can accept such acts. He mentions various contradictions and arguments surrounding the concept. He states that the biggest issue with suicide attacks is that when a person becomes convinced that they will die at a specific time and place, they enter a dangerous mental state, believing death to be their final objective. He adds that such thinking cannot be accepted in any democratic or humanitarian system, as it goes against the fundamental principles of life, society, and law. Editorial Perspective

The fact that these terrorists attempted to use increasingly modern weapons shows that the problem of jihadi terrorism remains unresolved. Though they failed this time, the future remains uncertain. Therefore, efforts to eliminate such terrorism must now be taken up on a war footing.
