A major hospital in Jamnagar (Gujarat) conducted heart surgeries on 800 healthy people and extorted ₹6 crore

Jamnagar (Gujarat) – At the ‘JCC Heart Institute’ here, heart surgeries were performed on healthy individuals and unnecessary stents were implanted. Over the past one-and-a-half years, as many as 800 such procedures were recorded. Bills amounting to ₹6 crore were extracted from the concerned beneficiaries. The unusually high numbers raised suspicion within the Health Department, leading to the exposure of the scam.

1. The hospital claimed that all these surgeries were conducted under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana’ and submitted the bills to the Health Department. The volume of procedures and the corresponding billing aroused suspicion, prompting officials to initiate an inquiry.

2. The preliminary probe revealed that 105 people had stents inserted despite being completely healthy. The operation was allegedly carried out to siphon off money from the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. It has been alleged that Dr Parsh Vora deliberately kept all online and admission-related information of Ayushman Card beneficiaries to himself, ensuring that the other directors and partners of the hospital remained unaware.

3. The investigation also uncovered that pharmaceutical establishments paid doctors a 20 per cent commission for sending patients to them. The hospital has now been removed from the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, and a penalty of ₹6 lakh has been imposed.

4. Earlier, a similar scam under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme had surfaced in a renowned hospital in Karnavati. In that case, 19 individuals were forcibly subjected to angiography, while angioplasty was performed on seven patients. Two of them died and five are currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.
