Gujarat court sentences 3 Muslims to life imprisonment for cow slaughter !

Even though cow is considered sacred in Hinduism, they killed the cow ! – Sessions Judge Rizwana Bukhari

Amreli (Gujarat) – The sessions court in Amreli district on November 10 sentenced three people to life imprisonment in a cow slaughter case. The court noted that the three committed the crime knowingly, knowing that the cow is considered sacred in Hinduism. The state government has called the verdict a ‘historic decision’ and has made it clear that ‘no leniency will be shown for such crimes’.

Life imprisonment for cow slaughter for the first time

District and Sessions Judge Rizwana Bukhari convicted Qasim Haji Solanki, Sattar Ismail Solanki and Akram Haji Solanki. The three were also fined a total of Rs 18 lakh. This is the first case of life imprisonment for cow slaughter in Gujarat.

Details of the incident

In the year 2023, three people killed cows for financial gain in Amreli city. An estimated 40 kg of beef and the tools used for the slaughter were seized from the scene.

State law stipulates life imprisonment as the punishment for the offense of cow slaughter

State government spokesperson Jitu Vaghani said that the state government is fully committed to cow protection. The cow slaughter ban law was made stricter in 2011 when Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister. In 2017, it was amended and a provision of life imprisonment was made.

Editorial Perspective

Life imprisonment for cow slaughter is a step in the right direction, but considering the extent and persistence of such acts, stricter punishment, including the death penalty may now be required. Legislative action toward this end is both timely and necessary !
