Girls with Mehndi on Their Hands Removed from Classroom in a Mumbai School !

Education Department orders the school to submit a written explanation

Mumbai – At St. Anthony’s, a well-known girls’ school in Chembur, some students returned after the Diwali vacation with mehndi (heena) applied on their hands. The school administration refused to let them sit in class. According to parents, the school said, “You will not be allowed inside the classroom unless the mehndi is removed.” The girls were sent out of class, causing them mental stress.

Taking serious note of the incident, Deputy Education Officer and Education Inspector Dr. Mushtaq Shaikh visited the school and conducted a full inquiry. The Education Department issued a direct notice to the school stating that “not allowing students to sit in class due to mehndi is against rules and violates students’ rights.” The school has been ordered to submit a written explanation.

Principal denies the incident !

The teachers have rejected the allegations and denied that any such incident took place. The principal stated, “No such event happened in the school. Students were only asked to follow discipline rules. We have not yet received any notice from the Education Department.”

Warning of protest in the next phase !

MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) General Secretary Karn Dunbale said, “No one can force a student to give up her cultural identity to attend school. The Constitution gives equal right to education to all. The girls were allowed back in class only after our intervention. If needed, we will protest in our own way in the next phase.”

Editorial Perspectives
