Encounter of Rohit Arya was fake; will file a petition in court : Advocate Nitin Satpute, Supreme Court

Mumbai – Rohit Arya was neither a terrorist nor a notorious criminal. Police are trained to tackle such situations — why didn’t they shoot him in the hand or leg instead of killing him ? They could have saved his life, but they showed no mercy, alleged Supreme Court Advocate Nitin Satpute. He further stated that the draft for a petition has been prepared and it will soon be filed in court.

Advocate Satpute said, “Rohit Arya was involved in the government’s ‘Clean Schools Initiative’. The government withheld ₹2 crore owed to him. He had even gone on a hunger strike to demand payment, yet the money was not released. A criminal case should be registered against the minister and the officials who deceived him. Kidnapping children was a wrong step, but those who pushed him into that situation must also be held accountable. A thorough investigation is necessary.

The Commissioner of Police never mentioned that Rohit Arya possessed a real firearm. If it was an air gun, then the police must clarify how many pellets he fired or how he allegedly threatened them. The safety of the children was paramount, but killing Rohit Arya was unjustified. He too was an Indian citizen — the police should have tried to save him. A murder case must be registered against the officers who shot him. Rohit Arya was in contact with the police for two hours — why didn’t they reach out to his family during that time ? Why didn’t they assure him that his pending dues would be paid ? Why wasn’t a conversation arranged with the then Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar ? The government must introspect on why a decent individual was driven to such desperation.”

Editorial Perspective

If this allegation of a fake encounter is true, it is extremely serious — those responsible for suppressing justice through unlawful killing must face strict legal action.
