New Delhi – According to a report by the news channel NDTV, former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina said, “I am living freely in Delhi; but I would like to return home (to Bangladesh) !” After the uprising in Bangladesh in August 2024, Sheikh Hasina left the country and has been taking refuge in India since then. Until now she had not commented publicly after arriving in India; this statement is her first such remark.
Sheikh Hasina further said that she will not return to Bangladesh under the leadership of any government formed after elections from which her party was excluded. For the time being, she plans to remain in India.
We will be allowed to contest elections !
The head of Bangladesh’s interim government, Mohammad Yunus, has promised to hold elections in February 2026 ; however, a ban has been imposed on Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League. On that ban Sheikh Hasina said that millions continue to support the Awami League, but given the present circumstances they will not vote. If you want a functioning political system, you cannot deprive millions of people of the right to vote. “We are not asking Awami League voters to back other parties, because we still hope truth will prevail and that we will be allowed to contest the elections,” she said.
