Mumbai – The 950-year-old Shiv temple at Ambernath in Thane district, a monument protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), has developed deep cracks, with several parts of the temple collapsing and many sculptures broken. Despite this alarming deterioration, the ASI has made no plans for the temple’s restoration or preservation. This temple is among the oldest in India and holds immense historical and architectural significance.
Information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act by Sanatan Prabhat correspondent Mr Pritam Nachankar has revealed that the ASI’s Mumbai regional office has not conducted any survey for the restoration or repair of the Ambernath temple.

The temple walls feature intricate sculptures of deities such as Shri Vishnu, Ganapati, Narasimha, and others in dancing postures. Most of these sculptures are now damaged — several idols have lost their heads, while some have broken limbs. Many structural portions of the temple have also collapsed. Years of neglect by the Archaeological Department have left this ancient shrine in a dire state.
