Allegations of Chinese Govt's conspiracy to destroy culture and language

Beijing (China) – Uyghur Muslims have strongly criticized China’s recently enacted ‘Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress’. The law is an attempt to institutionalize forced labour, which Uyghur Muslims fear will further threaten the identity, language and culture of non-Han communities. The Uyghur Centre for Democracy said the law is the latest in China’s long-standing repressive policies.

Addressing the 19th session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Geneva (Switzerland), Dolkun Isa, President of the Uyghur Centre for Democracy, said that the law, which came into effect on July 1st, 2026, represents a major and very serious shift in China’s policies towards Uyghurs, Tibetans and other non-Han communities. The law works to push regional languages, religious practices and cultural traditions out of the mainstream. The law includes arbitrary arrests, family separations, banning the Uyghur language, destruction of cultural and religious heritage and displacement of Uyghur communities. The law will legalize such steps that are completely contrary to the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.
