  • Pakistan launches counterattack on Afghanistan

Kabul (Afghanistan) – Following Pakistan’s airstrike on a base of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, the Taliban Government’s military retaliated by attacking Pakistani military posts along the Durand Line on the night of 11th October. The assault reportedly lasted three hours, during which the Taliban claimed 58 Pakistani soldiers were killed.

According to Taliban sources, 25 Pakistani border posts were seized, and seven Pakistani soldiers were taken hostage by Afghan forces. This is said to be Afghanistan’s largest-ever attack on Pakistani troops. As of now, Pakistan has not issued any official response to the incident.

1. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid stated that the Afghan army had taken control of 25 Pakistani posts. ‘In our attack, 58 Pakistani soldiers were killed, and more than 30 were injured’, he said.

2. Afghanistan’s Defence Minister, Mullah Muhammad Yaqoob Mujahid, said in a press conference, ‘Afghanistan’s security remains stable. A particular faction within the Pakistani military is attempting to destabilise Afghanistan and spread unrest. This group is running false propaganda and encouraging border hostilities. Our Government is prepared to respond to any aggression. The Pakistani side has ignored the presence of the Islamic State within its own territory. Afghanistan has the full right to defend its borders, and no attack will go unanswered’.

3. Photos of the captured Pakistani soldiers were also shown to the media. In the images, soldiers were seen blindfolded and with their hands tied.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and other Islamic nations urge restraint

Following the outbreak of hostilities between Pakistan and Afghanistan, several Islamic nations have appealed for calm and restraint from both sides. India has so far refrained from commenting on the escalating situation.

Saudi Arabia said, ‘We urge both countries to exercise self-restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritise dialogue and understanding’. Notably, Pakistan had recently signed a defence agreement with Saudi Arabia, and this major attack followed shortly after.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry also called on both nations to prioritise dialogue and restraint, emphasizing the need to reduce tensions for the sake of regional peace and stability. Other Islamic countries have expressed concern and said they are closely monitoring the situation.

Pakistan conducts drone strike on Kandahar

After Afghanistan’s attack, the Pakistani military reportedly launched a drone strike on Kandahar city in Afghanistan. The strike was said to have hit residential areas. Pakistan also claimed it captured an Afghan military post in South Waziristan during a retaliatory operation.
