Rome, Italy – Italy’s ruling party, Brothers of Italy, has recently introduced a new bill in Parliament proposing a ban on wearing the burqa and niqab in public places.

According to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party, the purpose of this law is to curb religious extremism. As per the proposed legislation, wearing a burqa or niqab would be strictly prohibited in all public spaces — including schools, universities, offices, shops, and government buildings.

Violators could face fines ranging from €300 to €3,000 (approximately ₹28,000 to ₹2,80,000).

France was the first European country to impose a ban on the burqa. In 2011, France prohibited wearing the burqa in public places.

Following France’s lead, more than 20 countries including Belgium, Austria, Turkey, Tunisia, Sri Lanka, and Switzerland have also implemented bans on the burqa or niqab.

The European Court of Human Rights has also upheld the legality of these bans.
