The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Machado

US President Donald Trump’s dream is shattered

Oslo (Norway) – The Nobel Peace Prize that U.S. President Donald Trump had been aspiring to win has instead been awarded to María Machado, an opposition leader from Venezuela in South America. Machado has made tireless efforts to uphold democratic rights in Venezuela and has played a key role in the peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

“It was necessary to honour such courageous individuals” – Nobel Committee

The Nobel Committee stated that at a time when dictatorship is spreading and democracy is weakening in many parts of the world, the courage of individuals like María Machado inspires hope. Democracy is a prerequisite for lasting peace. When those in power suppress people through violence and fear, it becomes essential to honor such brave figures. Machado founded an organization called ‘Súmate’, which works for the betterment of democracy. She has been persistently fighting for free and fair elections in her country.

Prize amount : ₹10 crore

María Machado will receive ₹10.3 crore (approximately USD 1.2 million), a gold medal, and a certificate as part of the award. The prize will be formally presented in Oslo on December 10.
