Stone pelting at Hindu youth’s home after alleged insult to religious sentiments; 150 rioters booked in Miraj (District Sangli)

  • 14 Muslims arrested

  • Orders to act against nine people who spread propaganda on social media

Miraj, 9 October – A case of unlawful assembly was registered against 150 people who rampaged through the town on the night of 7 October in violation of curfew orders. Fourteen of them have been arrested. The Police have ordered action against nine people for spreading inflammatory posts on social media.

What happened

1. Citing an allegedly insulting remark that hurt religious sentiments, a group of Muslims brutally assaulted a Hindu youth on the night of 7 October. They also pelted stones at his home.

2. The mob forced all shops in the town to shut and tore down political hoardings, creating chaos. They also tore down welcome arches and digital images of the Devi that had been put up for Navratri. Several political leaders’ posters were also ripped.

Municipal action

To prevent further hoarding vandalism, the municipal administration promptly removed all digital hoardings. After discussion that unauthorised digital hoardings had inflamed the dispute, the municipality took this decisive step. It has been demanded that going forward the Sangli, Miraj and Kupwad Municipal Corporation areas implement strict rules for erecting digital hoardings and welcome arches and allow them only after fulfilling all terms and conditions.

(Editorial Perspective : If the question arises whether the administration will take any stern action to curb such violent acts and the mindset that incites riots, how would that be wrong ?)

“When a particular community erupts, it immediately goes out of control” – MLA Idris Naikwadi

On 8 October the district Police headquarters convened a meeting between Hindu and Muslim community groups and the administration. During the peace committee meeting, NCP MLA Idris Naikwadi said, “When a particular community erupts it goes beyond control. At that moment it is not in a state to listen to anyone.” (Editorial Perspective : By endorsing such organised hooliganism and terrorising Hindus, Naikwadi appears to be lending support to intimidation. He will never demand exposure of those behind drug sales in Miraj, the resulting addiction, and the organised crime that follows.)
