Temples and Idols are India’s glory and prestige : Dr G B Deglurkar

Dr G B Deglurkar known for his significant contribution to Indian art, temple architecture and iconography

Chiplun, Maharashtra – The temple is a social institution. This is a place where people of all the levels in society congregate (gather). The temple and the temple’s idol teaches ‘Dharma’. The awareness of Dharma and protection of dharma instills moral values and culture in society. Temples and its Idols are India’s glory and prestige. So long as there are temples in India the ‘Bharatiya’ culture will continue. Hence the preservation, conservation and construction of Temples is a necessity; this is the statement of the renowned archaeologist, teacher of temple architecture and iconography Dr. GP Deglurkar. He was speaking at programme of ‘Snehal Prakashan’ at Chiplun where he was to felicitate author Prakash Deshpande with the ‘Snehanjali’ award.

Deglurkar further said, ‘presently India has the most temples than anywhere in the world. Earlier temples were built in countries like Egypt, Greece, Italy, and Babylon. The Muslims destroyed them when they attacked these countries. But in India they have still lasted. The English, Muslims and Christians destroyed Indian Temples too. But we are rebuilding them. The country has got a Prime Minister who builds Temples and nurtures Dharma.

Speaking on this occasion Madhav Bhandari BJP’s District Vice President said, ‘for the past 75 years we have been taught lies and narratives as history. ‘India is a backward and poor country where snake charmers and people who earn their living by showing monkey acrobatics. this country exists because the British colonised it. The Mughuls brought wealth to the country’, this has been the false narrative fed as history. The foreign attacks were because there was wealth in the country which these attackers wanted. We are only now understanding, what lies we were taught as our history? And how the truth was hidden from us?
